2012 NFL Mock Draft
Every April, something magical happens. The Zephyr’s favorite sports event happens over 3 days. No, its not a cricket match, it’s the NFL Draft. I love everything about the draft, the lead up, the speculations, the trades and free agent signings. I track this. In some ways, I love it more than the season. But you know what my favorite part. The mocks.
Whether it’s serious mocks from the likes of Mel Kiper, Todd McShay, or Scott Wright. Or it’s reading through endless of forums, paying attention to the Rotoworld player updates, or what I occasionally do. My own mock.
Every year I usually end up doing 3 mocks. I believe I’ve done 1 this year already, but this is my 2nd but potentially the last. I’m not paying attention to the news as much, I don’t even have Insider anymore. This could be my bow out for the season.
I wanted to add a note. People often look back at mock drafts and go, wow I was completely wrong this season on where these guys got drafted, or some GMs made terrible decisions. The main problem with having accurate mock drafts are the effects of trades. If you try to make your own trades, you end up making less sense. The safest thing to do is not factor trades in. So in this mock draft, this is simulating what teams need and best player available.
1-1: Indianapolis – QB Andrew Luck Stanfurd: pretty obvious here, he’s been on their radar since starting 0-1. With Peyton gone,
1-2: Washington (via Stl.) – QB Robert Griffith Baylor: They gave up a boatload to get here with one target in mind. Lets see how good Shannahan is.
1-3: Minnesota – LT Matt Kahil U$C: The Vikings really need to improve their starting line, horrendous line last year. Give Ponder some time, I don’t see them passing up an elite blindside protector with it such a huge need.
1-4: Cleveland – WR Justin Blackmon Oklahoma St: Its either him or RB Trent Richardson, Cleveland needs more offense. I could see a trade down,
1-5: Tampa Bay – RB Trent Richardson Alabama: They need someone to compliment Blount, they could go for Claiborne if they want to potentially have an all pro CB in waiting if Talib gets in trouble?
1-6: St. Louis Rams (via Was) – CB Morris Claiborne LSU: The best player available, makes a great tandem with Finnegan and improves the D.
1-7: Jacksonville Jaguars – OT Riley Reiff Iowa: The man was once arrested for public intoxication and urinating in a kitchen. Idk, Jacksonville is a mess. Needs a WR, would have to reach for Floyd or Kendall Wright. They have a horrendous GM.
1-8: Miami Dolphins – QB Ryan Tannenhill Texas A&M: The new offensive coordinator is Tannenhill’s old head coach in college. He is a huge boom or bust pick. Miami wants to try to bring him in slowly, get Matt Moore competition.
1-9: Carolina Panthers – DE Quinton Couples UNC: The panthers see another Tar Heel defensive end with huge upside, they also need a DE to bookend Charles Johnson. Expect defensive line with this one, so maybe Fletcher Cox.
1-10: Buffalo Bills – OT/OG David Decastro Stanfurd: The Bills are so unconventional that its nearly impossible to know who’ll they’ll draft, they have a huge gapping hole at LT so maybe they take the best lineman available. Decastro is a potential perennial all-pro guard so maybe he could kick out to LT eventually.
1-11: Kansas City Chiefs – NT Dontari Poe Memphis: I’m not in love with the prospect, but he’s high on the Chief’s board and they need a NT.
1-12: Seattle Seahawks – LB Luke Kuechly Boston College: Not the same prospect as Rolando McClain or Patrick Willis (Bay Area in the House), but the ‘Hawks need someone to stabilize their defense. Huge upgrade over recently signed Barrett Ruud.
1-13: Arizona Cardinals – OLB/DE Courtney Upshaw Alabama: The Cardinals need to get some pass rush pressure on the opposing QBs, also need o-line.
1-14: Dallas Cowboys – DE/DT Fletcher Cox Mississippi St: The Cowboys really need to improve their Defense all around (except the linebackers), so they take the best prospect available.
1-15: Philadelphia Eagles – DT Michael Brockers LSU: High Upside, and the Iggies need more production from their DT’s in their Wide-9 formation. Maybe Courtney Upshaw from South Carolina at DE.
1-16: New York Jets – WR Michael Floyd Notre Dame: The Jets need a lot (o-line, d-line, rush linebacker) but this is to make Sanchez happy and give him long term weapons.
1-17: Cincinnati (via Oakland) – CB Dre Kirkpatrick Alabama: Cincy has never backed down from a prospect with a shady record, they need to replace Leon Hall (IR) and Nate Clements (32).
1-18: San Diego Chargers – OLB/DE Melvin Ingram South Carolina: not the same prospect as Ingram in my book, but by far the 2nd best 3-4 OLB left, English was a bust they need someone bookending Shaun Phillips.
1-19: Chicago Bears – LT Jonathon Martin Stanfurd: J’Marcus Webb is just happy he doesn’t have to face Julius Peppers… but he does have Clay Matthews, Jared Allen, and Cliff Avril… you need a good LT in the NFC North. I prefer him to Mike Adams of Ohio State
1-20: Tennessee Titans – CB Stephon Gilmore South Carolina: The Titans need someone to replace Cortland Finnegan, if not potentially D-Line
1-21: Cincinnati Bengals – OT/OG Cordy Glenn Georgia: Cinncy wants to bolster the o-line.
1-22: Cleveland (via ATL) – CB Janoris Jenkins North Alabama: I don’t know if the Browns go corner here, but he’s a solid talent and a position of need. Could be a huge steal, lots of upside. Already drafted a WR and not a good enough RB to reach for unless Holmgren loves Doug Martin.
1-23: Detroit Lions – OT Mike Adams Ohio State: The Lions need a future replacement for Backus at LT, but could slot him immediately into RT over Cherilus.
1-24: Pittsburgh Steelers – ILB Donte’ Hightower Alabama: They released Farrior, they need a young player maker in the LB Crew. Maybe a trade up to get a good tackle, or Poe (Bills perhaps?)
1-25: Denver Broncos – WR Kendall Wright Baylor: Gives Peyton a young options with Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, could be a future pro bowler, comparisons to Mike Wallace
1-26: Houston Texans – S Mark Barron Alabama: Barron goes way after his value, great deal for the Texans who improve to an already awesome D and be upgrade over Glover Quinn. If not Barron, maybe a pass rushing LB to replace Mario Williams.
1-27: New England (via NO)- WR Stephen Hill Georgia Tech: look for a trade down here or at their later 1st, but I think Bellichick is fascinated with this raw talent, but imagine if you added Demaryius Thomas to this arsenal.
1-28: Green Bay Packers – C Peter Konz Wisconsin: Even though the pack brought in Jeff Saturday, we know he won’t last long, he’s probably not Kevin Mawae. If not look for a trade down or pass rusher, maybe Nic Perry of U$C or Chandler Jones of Syracuse, maybe a 3-4 DE like Andre Branch.
1-29: Baltimore Ravens – S Harrison Smith Notre Dame: Ozzie Newsome plucks a great replacement for Reed, could get a hell of a steal in the young safety from South Bend.
1-30: San Francisco 49ers – TE Coby Fleener Stanfurd: After his insane pro-day, I can see Harbaugh salivating at getting his former college TE. Great value, gives Smith options.
1-31: New England Patriots – DE/OLB Whitney Mercilus Illinois: Pats need pass rushing LBs, this is great value and a need. That or probably a trade down.
1-32: New York Giants – OLB Lavonte David Nebraska: The Giants need upgrades on their LB outside of Boley, Williams is still young too but David is great value for the defending champs.
